| …Part of that tempting innocence wasn’t optional, in 1950 photographs depicting pubic hair were illegal.Today, how much to expose is a purely artistic decision. To me, few things are more enticing than mystery. I like temptation. I like to be teased. I like photos that show you almosteverything you dream of, but never quite enough. What to expect when doing a glamour shoot… Usually a whole lot of fun. You’ll start by getting your make-up done. Then picking an outfit and props which will work best with the poses you want to try.
A small collection of props is provided, and depending on the theme of the shoot, I may be able to provide wardrobe as well. If I don’t have appropriate wardrobe, you will have to provide it yourself. Next you’ll plug in your ipod, and spend an hour or two stretched across the set smoldering glamorously with studio lights flashing all around you in classic starlet style. |
You’ll look your sexy best if you are feeling relaxed and comfortable. So along with your favorite music, bring anything else that will make you feel calm, confident and sexy–a good luck charm, a good friend, a bottle of tequila–whatever it takes to build your confidence and sense of adventure. If you need the support and you’ve got a friend that will make you feel more comfortable, invite them. What you wear is entirely up to you. Of course, something terribly sexy. What is your style? Or better yet, what do you wish it were? You could go with a pin-up classic or something entirely modern, and it can be as racy or conservative as you like–from a full length 50′s dress and crinoline, to some see-through scandal from the west village, to nothing at all.
Bring as many outfits as you like, you don’t have to wear them all. If you’ve got something in mind, but you are afraid it will be too much (or too little) you can always bring it along, change your mind, and leave it on the hanger. |
Modeling |
modeling n. 2. The act or profession of being a model. modeling v. A great modeling portfolio should be striking and diverse and above all, should make you look beautiful. | Beautyphotography is all about the face. Beauty shots are close ups, usually from the bust up. They are very intimate and require an excellent make-up artist and meticulous attention to detail. A beauty shot is essential to any modeling portfolio.Fashionphotography is used by designers to market clothing and accessories. Fashion shoots focus on current styles and the model’s figure. Fashion photography can be very creative as long as the clothes and model look cool. Fashion shoots should be very up to date. As obvious as it sounds, browsing though current fashion magazines is the easiest way to find inspiration for a fashion shoot.Editorial shoots are what happens when any other type of shoot gets too crazy to fit in its old category. Editorials should be cutting edge, they attempt to push the boundaries of style, trends and techniques. They are where imagination really comes to life–unique setting and poses, obscure framing and style. …I like editorials, they are the model and photographer’s chance to be the most creative. | Glamourphotography focuses exclusively on the sexiness of the model and her body. FHM, Maxim, Playboy, Suicide Girls and Swimsuit shoots are all examples of glamour photography. I discuss this style in further detail in the Pin-Up and Glamour section.Commercialphotography is used to sell a broad range of mainstream products. Commercial modeling is the most sterile of the five categories, because the model is usually expected to represent a broad grouping of consumers. Commercial photography, which includes most stock photography and parts modeling, tends to be bright, clean, and high key. It can’t be too bold, dark or daring, it needs to appeal to everyone. If you are interesting in commercial modeling, think pretty but safe. Choose popular styles for your clothing and hair.I strongly recommend meeting in person before a portfolio shoot. Sitting down together for just a few minutes to plan ahead can really help ensure you get the style and professional quality you want to make a great book. |
Headshots and Portraits |
headshot n. 2. A bullet or shot aimed at and hitting portrait n. A good headshot is the most basic requirement for finding work in film, television, and theatre. Traditionally, head shots are an 8×10 black and white portrait of your face, but the rules have been loosening up in recent years. Color, 3/4 body shots and landscape frames are all becoming acceptable. Regardless of frame or color, a head shot has two absolutely essential obligations… (more below) |

| First, your headshot must look like you. It should be up to date, and honest–your best you, but still you. If your head shot is ten years old, or totally airbrushed, they are going to find out. You might get the audition, but you won’t get the part. Your head shot should accurately accentuate your best traits as well as your character. And second, your head shot should be eye catching. There is a lot of competition out there, and head shots start to look very similar, very quickly. A little extra spark can pull you out of the crowd. If a color photo, striking lighting, or a 3/4 frame will help with this, great, but be sure that extra intensity, energy, expressiveness, or intimacy is in your eyes as well. | Wear something stylish and in keeping with you and the roles you intend to play, but keep it subtle. If your clothing is too distinct you may stereotype yourself out of a different role.Generally, the same wardrobe rules that apply to auditions apply to getting headshots. Don’t wear pure white, or bright red, don’t wear anything that might distract or compete with you. Avoid crazy patterns or busy prints. Jewelry should be minimal and not intrusive.Unlike an audition, you can show up with as many outfits as you like. Bring at least five or six tops, vary the neckline, style, cut, and color. And don’t forget to iron your clothes. |
